At first, it was said that income tax raid was happening at Vishal’s house and office. Then it was said GST intelligence unit was searching his office at Vadapalani.
Finally, it emerged that the IT department’s TDS (tax deducted at source) wing visited his production office and conducted inquiry for not depositing Rs 51 lakh collected as TDS into the government account.
It is also learnt that the actor was asked to appear before the income tax officials on Friday to give explanation.
Meanwhile, speaking to reporters in Chennai on Monday night, Vishal said, “I came to know that TDS officials visited my premises. I was at a shooting. There was no one in my office then. I am ready to face any inquiry.”
Soon after the raid news spread, there were messages in social media that it was conducted because of the spat between Vishal, who is also the president of Tamil Film Producers Council, and BJP leader H Raja over Vijay-starrer ‘Mersal’.
However, Joint Director of GST intelligence wing P V K Rajasekhar said in a release: “It is to clarify that the officers of DGGSTI have not conducted any such search operations and the news which is being circulated is factually incorrect and false.”
