Thaana Serndha Kootam

– Review

A lot was riding on ‘Thaana Serndha Kootam’ for multiple reasons- Suriya was badly in need of a hit, the film was the next outing of director Vignesh Shivan after ‘Naanum Rowdy Dhaan’, the movie boasted a huge star cast and Anirudh has scored music for a Suriya movie for the first time.
After creating much expectations, the film has hit the screens and we must say it is a festival treat by the combo of Vignesh Shivan and Suriya.
A remake of Akshay Kumar-starrer ‘Special 26’, the film is set in the backdrop of 1980s. The director has made many interesting changes to the original script and has once again proved that he is gifted with good writing skills.
Now the story. Nachinarku Iniyan (Suriya) aspires to become a CBI officer and his friend wants to become a policeman. But they are unable to achieve their mission, due to corrupt officials.
As his friend commits suicide, Iniyan vows to teach a fitting lesson to the corrupted. He forms a team with four persons (Ramya Krishnan, Senthil, Shivasankar and Sathyan) and they conduct fake raids posing as CBI officers.
They bring out the black money from influential persons and use it for good purposes. In the meantime, an expert Kurinjinathan (Karthik) is appointed by the government to catch the gang.
He works with a corrupt CBI officer Uthaman (Suresh Menon) and a policeman Vetri (Nandha). However, the team led by Suriya is always smart and one step ahead than Kurinjinathan.
The rest is all about- Is Kurinjinathan able to pin down the fake team and whether Iniyan is able to cleanse the system?
What a refreshing changeover from Suriya! The actor has infused life to the film in general and his character in particular with a terrific performance. Ramya Krishnan, Senthil, Suresh Menon, Karthik, RJ Balaji, Keerthy Suresh and others fit well and do justice to their respective roles.
Anirudh’s special bond with Vignesh Shivan has worked wonders once again in Thaana Serndha Kootam in both songs and background score. Other major highlights of the movie include Dinesh Krishnan’s cinematography, Sreekar Prasad’s editing and the great work by the art department.
If you are ready to forgive and forget the preachy climax and some predictable scenes, ‘Thaana Serndha Kootam’ is here to add more flavour to your festival mood.
