Men, but women – Friday Spl. Article by Naveen

Sivakarthikeyan is making waves as nurse in the trailer and stills of his upcoming film ‘Remo’. In the past, many top actors had tried their hands in such feministic roles, at least for a scene or two. Let us have a look at them:
‘Avvai Shanmugi’ should be the first film to strike the mind of anyone in these parts while talking about actors performing woman roles.
It is a 1996 Tamil comedy film, directed by K S Ravikumar and written by Crazy Mohan, which is an Indian remake of the American comedy film, ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’.
Kamal dedicated this film to his mentor stage actor Avvai T. K. Shanmugham who was known for playing female roles in stage plays. The make-up took five hours to put on and lasts for only five more hours. Kamal wore a nine yards saree in the film for the female character.
Prashanth performed a similar role in ‘Aanazhagan’, a 1995 Tamil language film directed by Thiagarajan. The film is based on Telugu film ‘Chitram Bhalare Vichitram’.
Prashanth looked beautiful and his dramatic histrionics & Bharatanatyam dance in a woman’s costume are the best parts and highlight of the movie ‘Aanazhagan’.
Vishal was seen in woman’s getup in ‘Avan Ivan’, a film directed by Bala. The film stars Vishal, Arya, Janani Iyer and Madhu Shalini in the lead roles.
The film, produced by Kalpathi S. Agoram’s AGS Entertainment, features music by Yuvan Shankar Raja, cinematography by Arthur A. Wilson and editing by Suresh Urs.
Set in the backdrops of Theni, ‘Avan Ivan’ illustrates the relationship between two boisterously playful half-brothers.
The partnership of Goundamani and Sathyaraj provided many fun moments to the audience. While the former appeared in woman get-up in ‘Rickshaw Mama’ and ‘Nattamai’, the latter did it in ‘Maaman Magal’.
Vadivelu, known for tickling the funny bone in multiple looks, was seen in woman get-up in films such as ‘Pattali’ and ‘Nagaram’.
These two top stars were seen in woman get-ups in blink and miss roles in ‘Panakaaran’ and ‘Priyamanavaley’, respectively. While Suriya was seen in a woman get-up in ‘Ayan’ for few seconds, Vikram did a role with feministic body language in his recent flick ‘Iru Mugan’.
