At a time when many were eagerly waiting to watch Dhanush’s Hollywood debut ‘The Extraordinary Journey Of The Fakir’ in English, the film has been dubbed and released in Tamil itself, as ‘Pakkiri’.
Directed by Ken Scott, ‘Pakkiri’ is a feel good flick that explains the value and beauty of life to the audience in an indulging manner.
The story revolves around Rajakumaraguru Lakshmipathy aka Raja (Dhanush), who is the only child to his mother. She raises him by doing all sort of jobs in the slums of Mumbai.
As Raja understands the poor economic background of his family after going to school, he decides to earn money. He starts steals money from innocent foreigners and members of the public with the help of magic.
One day, his mom passes away and Raja comes to know that his father lives in Paris. He vows to make his dad and mom (ashes) meet at the Eiffel Tower and leaves for Paris.
But circumstances force him to become a refugee and he happens to visit multiple places, including England, Italy, Spain and also an African refugee camp.
He also falls for Marie (Erin Moriarty), an American woman who is seeking that one thing that’s missing in her life. The rest is all about how Raja realises that there are more important things in life than money and how he passes the message to others.
The story is narrated by Dhanush to three juveniles as he wants them to understand the real happiness of life. In the process, we too understand a thing or two about material and internal happiness.
Dhanush is terrific and it is his dialogue delivery and the great work by dialogue writers Jayaram Sankaran and Vikrem Vybav that save the movie to a great extent.
Equal credits go to creative consultant Varsha Bharath.
Another highlight of the movie is the fresh Indian score of Amit Trivedi which just elevates the mood.
Despite the script being ordinary at places, director Ken Scott manages to make an impact thanks to Dhanush’s performance, dialogue, music, cinematography and other aspects. The film can be watched with family, especially kids, on a weekend.
